President truman makes a fateful decision to deploy the atomic bomb. “this could end the WW2” people said but they had no idea of the true horrors of this new invention.
Almost getting to the end of the ww2, a super weapon is been studied. it is a secret and the most expensive project at that time. Studies were done in New Mexico, Manhattan. The study is to unlock the vast energies trapped within atomic nuclei completely.
On the 18th 1945 of June, the President calls a meet to decide if operation Downfall should go ahead.(Operation Downfall is the release of the atomic bomb on Japan).
He wanted to know everybody’s take on testing this new and understudied weapon.
On July 16th, They test the world’s first atomic bomb. The blast creates a Seven-mile high mushroom cloud. Now the hunger to use the bomb to stop Japanese invasion is intense. But with just on test, they didn’tnt know the extent it could go.
Just hours after the test, the navy loads the component for the first two bombs into a vessel ship called the USS Indianopolis, which would take the bombs to the flight that would send it to the sky.
Before the Atomic bomb was used, Over 70 scientist led by Leo Szilard signed a petition against the use of those bombs but this petition never got to the president.
The allied forces(which included- US, Britain, China and Russia) gives Japan an Automatum but the automatum was ignored. Japan was beginning to develop at that time so they really wanted to be recognized by other powerful countries.
On August 6th, 3-29s planes heads for Japan, one plane containing 141 pounds of enriched uranium. and the target is Hiroshima, Japan.
At about 8:15 in the morning, the atomic bomb is dropped.
The burst of Neutron and gamma radiation emanates, along with deadly shockwaves.
The outcome of the explosion was devasting, people were vaporized or incinerated, buildings were flattened instantly, shadow of vaporized individuals were preserved where they were standing before the explosion.
Many died from massive doses of gamma radiation. In less than a second, 70,000 people are killed and by the end of the day, thousands of people died from radiation injuries. Those outside during the blast suffered the most hideous burns.
At 11;01 am same day, The United States deploys another atomic bomb in Nagasaki, Japan. The explosion was 2 times more destructive than the first.
In a flash of light over 70,000 people dead and more dying from injuries. The target of the bomb in Nagasaki was the largest catholic church in Asian at that time – Urakami Cathedral. It is believed that the bomb used on Nagasaki is far more powerful that the one dropped on Hiroshima.
Japanese suffered gamma radiation levels more lethal. Individuals with no injuries at all would suddenly start bleeding from the mouth, nose and ears and then die. It was a cold day for Japan.
At midday 15 the emperor of Japan surrendered, and his terms lead to the end of the world war 2.
The Americans formed an atomic bomb casualty commission to assess the effects of the explosions, where injuries of casualties were noted. In time the true nature of the atomic bomb was discovered. Such things like birth deformities, cardiovascular diseases, and deadly cancers and these continues till this day.
The world didn’t learn about this because the horrors the US unleashed on Japan were confiscated- video clips, pictures and doctor’s journals of the effect of the explosion were all confiscated, uttered and was termed classified. The did not show the horrors that the Japanese faced.
It was not until 1970 that footage showing how humans suffered after the atomic bomb is broadcasted and learnt by the public.
